Description
Named after the Sicilian Pope Lion II, San leone is just 4 km away from the enchanting Valley of Temples and the historical-artistic beauties of the city of Agrigento. Largely used until the Arabian domination, the port fell in disuse during the Middle Ages. Traces of the Greek period have scarvely survived also because of the strong urbanisation process in the last century. The "lido" is equipped with a marina built in the' 80s which protects the adjacent promenade. It can host both small and medium-sized boats (up to 25 metres in length). More specifically, the marina consists of an outer dock, an inner breakwater and a long western quay with four floating jetties. The latter are equipped with 250 berths, 20 of which are specifically reserved for transiting boats. Because of strong coastal storms, the western quay has recently suffered from a progressive silting currently signaled by some small poles with a red light at the top. It is highly recommended to enter the port sailing as far as possibile from the green lantern and closer to the red one. A jetty is managed by the Yachting Club San Leone; the other three ones are managed by private and offer yachtsmen the possibility to dock. The Yacthing Club San Leone offers its partners an exclusive filling station, open from 07:00 to 20:00. The eastern quay includes 6 floating jetties, all managed by private clubs and equipped with water and electric charging columns. The Mare Nostrum Association has recently enlarged the range of yachting services of the port, offering showers with hot water, laudry service, hairdressers, guided tours in the Valley of Temples, free Wi-Fi, on-board catering, car rental, weather forecast reports and organization of on-board tastings. The northern quay is run by Leva Navale Italiana but it is accessible only by partners. Since, right of the port entrance, the seabed is just 2 metres deep, yachtsmen are adviced to stay on the right when entering the port and on the left when going out. The port of San Leone is surrounded by a nice village rich of free beaches, night clubs, bars, restaurants, souvenir shops and many other services.
