The origins of his occupation go back to Prehistory. Its strategic and privileged location, on the banks of the rich estuary, led throughout history to the establishment of numerous civilizations that were dedicated to trade and fishing.

It is believed that the population was founded in the eleventh century by the serfs of the Sé de Coimbra. Since then, the population has been growing steadily.
