Description

Despite the large number of tourists who crowd the village from May to October and the numerous well-equipped hotels and beach resorts, Kardamena is maybe the most pictureque village of Kos Island, where you can still enjoy a real Greek atmosphere.

Kardamena is located on the southern coast of the island, about 30 km far from Kos and near the international airport. Born as a fishing village, Kardamena still preserves this traditional activity: a large area of the harbour is occupied by fishing boats and fresh fish reaches the local restaurants every day.

The village has just 2000 inhabitants but, in summer, they can reach over 10000 people, thanks to the very popular beaches and crystal sea. The most popular beach is south of the harbour, 2 steps away from the village.

Arriving to Kardamena is not hard but be careful in case of Meltemi winds, especially at the entrance of the harbour. Just outside the harbour, mind two large floating platforms on the south-eastern side. Inside, a long breakwater and a dock ensure an excellent shelter from southern winds. The sea bottom is made up of sand and seaweeds.

Inside the harbour, depth is just 2-3 metres and the presence of some cement blocks in some areas can even reduce it. Our best advice is to ask the harbour staff for instructions about the mooring place to take.

Mooring places are just 10 or 12 along the northern quay and 2 at the southern dock. Each place is provided with water and electricity but only in summer.

The village offers a supermarket, some coffee bars, restaurants, souvenir shops.

Kardamena is an ideal place to relax and enjoy Greek sea and fresh fish at one of the restaurants in the village. Among the archaelogical attractions, the Temple of Apollo is just outside the village, together with some paleochristian basilicas and an ancient theatre.
