In the early 1960s, Derek and June Holt, along with their daughters Linda, Christine and Sandra, enjoyed surfing the Clyde from a mooring at Cardwell Bay in Gourock. Derek learned of a new innovation in the mooring of boats that is being developed abroad, which provided the walk in a structure that we like today. Being very familiar with the dangers of handing over the family and supplies to a boat on a mooring, he saw the potential immediately. The construction continued until the end of the 1960s, which coincided with the new main road of Inverkip and the start of the recently demolished power plant and the construction of the chimney. The first phase was completed in 1971 and in our gallery you will see a 1973 photo of a complete Kip Marina. It was the first marina in Scotland (just one of the reasons why we are the Premier of Scotland!) And only two other marinas in the UK were being built at the same time as Kip. Originally, the Marina was designed for 250 boats, but expanded to 600 moorings in 1984. In 1985, the Chartroom Bar & Restaurant was built along with the extended shower and bath facilities. These structures were renovated in 2007 to provide a cleaner cleaner and a much more elegant structure for the Kip sleepers. All the pontoons of the marina have been replaced, as well as the electrical system, the lighting, the corridors and the doors, together with a new avant-garde system with web camera with cctv coverage and we offer WI-FI connection inside the marina.
