Description

James Watt Dock began construction on August 1, 1878 and ended in 1886. Greenock to compete with Glasgow with the aim of attracting transatlantic traffic and establishing Greenock as "one of the largest and best equipped British seaports".
At the time of development, James Watts docked at the only dock on the Clyde where large-tonnage ships could be afloat afloat in all the tidal states. However, the development of the pier was not cheap. The original budget was estimated at £ 242,885 5s 3d, however, the actual outlay for 1886 was £ 634,343 8s 3d (or £ 850,000 including the price of the land). The justification for such a venture (and a substantial debt) was the growing volume of trade that moves from Clyde to Glasgow. Greenock will benefit from the largest shipments that would be used for trade and traffic. True and allowed Greenock to enter a period of expansion without example. The boom in trade has led to significant growth in the city.
