Description
That of Mergellina represents the second harbour in the city of Naples and one among the most important marinas within the Gulf of Naples. Since it is the main link between the peninsula, Ischia and Capri islands, it is subject to a very intense traffic of ships, fast hydrofoils and ferries.
Once, the port was exclusively used by local fishermen; today, on the contrary, it is a tourist port, protected by a long outer breakwater on the South and a shorter inner breakwater on the North.
The dock reserved for hydrofoils is located inside the port basin and west of the inner breakwater, while some floating piers raise in the innermost part. The areas reserved for recrational boats extend over about 1.5 km and they are managed by different societies, such as Luise & Sons, Cooperativa Ormeggiatori Nautici Mergellina and ASNA.
The port offers a filling station which provides with patrol, mixture and SIF gasoline; it is open from 06:00 to 20:00.
The proximity to the city centre allows visitors to find any service and facility in the surroundings, even though the port itself offers a plurality of services, such as electric repairs, covered and outside garaging areas, a fixed crane (20 t), 5 mobile cranes (15 tons), repairs of engines, sails, wooden/steel/fiberglass hulls.
The port of Mergellina offers a breath-taking view on Posillipo Hill, a beautiful promontory housing many luxury villas and cliffs. Moreover, Capo Possilipo hosts Virgil's Park, a green oasis not far from the Submerged Gaiola Park, which, in its turn, can be only visited thanks to boat guided tours or snorkeling/diving excursions.
The park hosts a great plurality of volcanic, archaelogical and biological elements. On the bottoms, in fact, raise the remains of some ancient ports and fisheries, in addition to some biological marine communities typical of the Mediterranean Sea
