Description

The Cala Portals Vells is located along the coast of the southwestern end of the island of Majorca, in the geographical area of Calvià. It is closed in its southern part by peak (Punta) de Xisclet and in the northern part by peak (Punta) s'Estaca.

The bay is located in a semi-urban area, divided into several smaller coves,  offers a various points to moor. Its waters are crystal clear, while the backdrops are good tenants and are made up of sand and algae.

Entering the bay, on the left, you immediately meet the creek of Sa Caleta de Portals Vells, surrounded by beautiful pine forests. It has a small sandy beach where, in the summer, you can rent parasols and deck chairs. The access to the bay can also be via mainland, leaving the vehicle at about 200 meters far from the beach and then walking along the path that crosses the bay.

In close proximity to Sa Caleta, it is possible to anchor in a good tenant backdrop, with a depth of about five meters. This creek is open to the south and south east winds.

In the inner part of the bay of Portals Vells there are two other small creeks, divided between them by a promontory. The left creek is Platja del Mago (to which the name was given after the film with Anthony Quinn and Micheal Caine, which was shot right here in the '60s).

It has been the first beach in the Balearic Islands, where nudism has been authorized. This creek is open to southern and south-east winds, has a good backdrop, with a depth ranging between 4 and 5 meters.

Access to the beach by land is via a footpath. On site, guests can find a small bathing establishment which sypplies umbrellas and deckchairs and a bar.

The bay on the right is Platja El Rej. Even here, the backdrops are good tenants, but it is good to pay attention to the fact that the bottom of the right side of the creek is rocky, and with a very slender slope (100 meters from the shore, the depth of the sea bottom is still about 1.50 meters). The best place to moor is instead on the left, near the small promontory between Platja del Mago and Platja El Rey.

Entering into the creek, on the right side, there is a jutting pier that creates a small landing place where some small boats are often moored. Access to the beach can also be from mainland, leaving the car in a nearby car park and then walking for about 300 meters along the coast trail.

On Platja del Rey you can find a kiosk where you can rent beach equipment (sun loungers, deckchairs).

The location is not particularly central and their small size makes these beaches not much frequented by swimmers who come from the mainland, even during the high season.

The surroundings of Cala Portals Vells are predominantly residential and there are not many commercial activities. There are some hotels and restaurants, while bus stops are about 800 meters from the bay.

At about 3 km from the cave, there is a golf course.

The Son Ferrer center is located about 5 km away, the El Toro is rather 9 km. (A little further toward north there is Santa Ponca). The center of Calvià is located about 13 kilometers away.

To travel to the southern part of Mallorca you may want to rent a car, but consider also the public transport service on wheels, which is efficient.

Not far from Cala Portals Vells, continuing northward, there is another beautiful bay on the south-east Mallorcan coast: Cala Xada.
