Ice 60 Gran Comfort: comfort, speed and high technology

8 mins read

The new Ice 60 Gran Comfort is a cruiser devoted to comfort, performance and the most advanced technology

The Ice Yachts shipyard introduces a brand-new product, the Ice 60 Gran Comfort, Ice 60 Gran Comfort sterna cruising and even more easy sailing version of the already very fast ICE 60, which winks at owners looking for an important boat suitable for fast and, above all, comfortable cruising experiences.

A result of a joint collaboration between Umberto Felci‘s design studio and the shipyard’s technical staff, the Ice 60 Gran Comfort promises to be a true fast and high-end cruiser with extraordinarily large spaces, beautiful lines and guest-oriented innovative interiors.

Ice 60 Gran Comfort top viewDerived from the powerful lines of the Ice 60 standard, with a combination of content taken from the shipyard’s 62- and 70-footers, the new model enhances the features of sturdiness, seaworthiness and performance that have made the success of the brand.

Featuring a modern design – with reverse (scimitar) bow, carbon 1.3-meter bowsprit and Volvo Open 70-style stern – the Ice 60 GC is the natural evolution of the Ice 52, another Ice Yachts bestseller with over 15 units built to date.

From an hydrodynamic point of view, both waterlines and appendages – this time characterized by an unprecedented draft of 2.90 meters – are designed to deliver great performance, with impressive results in terms of clause-hauled and downwind speed: under power, the cruising speed reaches over 10 knots.

These performance are made possible by the high construction technologies used and the incredible quality of a craftsmanship performed by technicians who make use of the experience gained over many years of activity dedicated to the construction of boats that have written the history of sailing.

The hull and deck are Ice 60 Gran Comfort bimini topinfusion laminated from a female muold using carbon fibers; the carbon structures are also laminated on site and also made in infusion, becoming one with the hull and deck, eliminating creaks and noises. In addition to the classic gluing tecnique, the deck is tied to the hull as well as all the bulkheads, creating a one-piece and very sturdy structure.

These choices, in addition to reducing weights, give the boat a solidity and sturdiness able to withstand the repeated stresses and heavy loads that are faced even in the most demanding navigations.

The Ice 60 Gran Comfort is equipped with a fin made of double Weldox steel with high mechanical characteristics and a numerically controlled milled lead torpedo that offer the advantage of reducing the weight of the ballast in percentage terms and, therefore, the overall displacement of the boat with the same righting moment.

Ice 60 Gran Comfort beach clubThanks to the oversized bulb, it is possible to significantly reduce heeling in navigation and roll when the boat is stationary in the harbour. Hence, great power in the situations where this is essential and minimal displacement in the situations where, instead, this represents an obstacle, such as for example downing and under-power navigation. All this translates into high average speeds in all conditions, whether in racing or cruising mode, sailing or under-power navigation.

The rudder is designed with cutting-edge technologies, allowing impressive control even when the boat is heeling or subjected to large aerodynamic loads, always keeping a special focus on safety, which is central on both the design and construction level.

The deck reflects the general lines of the Felci Yacht Design projects, combining simplicity and style, elegance and efficiency, comfort and versatility.

The cockpit, characterized by large benches and comfortable backrests, is decidedly oversized and allows maximum mobility to numerous crews ; the stern area accommodates a fabulous 3.4 meter wide sundeck.

At the stern there is Ice 60 Gran Comfort cockpita removable aft deck of about 120 x 120 cm, equipped with two closing lids, one to cover a professional barbecue and a sink, the other to cover a stowage locker with access from above. With the doors closed, the bench is covered with cushions in water-repellent material.

To facilitate access from the deck to the bathing platform, there is a ladder fixed to the tailgate which closes at the same time as the tailgate is closed. The large garage, almost at the level of a 70-footer, is designed to contain an inflated 3.1 meter tender.

In the garage, two electric winches are provided for opening the hatch and handling the tender, always with a view to the search for comfort and ease of use. Furthermore, many details highlight how the study of the deck was carried out in the search for a synthesis between an ideal deck for a relaxed cruising life and one full of seaworthiness and efficiency, necessary during a long-range navigation or regatta.

Ice 60 Gran Comfort dinetteParticularly elegant is the maxi dodger or bimini protecting the helmsman, both designed to emphasize the focus of the ICE 60GC on the comfort aspect.

Examples of this research are the hydraulic fairleads and the electric mooring winch in the bow.

Following this philosophy, the sail plan is characterized by a genoa without overlapping, the absence of flying shrouds and by the plates, made of carbon, positioned directly on the hull.

The overall length of the Ice 60 Gran Comfort is under 18 meters to allow access to the discounted rates that some marinas grant to boats of this size.

Thanks to the technologies used for the construction of the interiors, such as the use of lightened panels, a considerable weight saving is obtained compared to a traditional construction, without however renouncing the value of carpentry work, both in the refinement of finishes and in the excellence of the details.

In the 4-cabin version, the interiors consist of 3Ice 60 Gran Comfort saloon heads and a large open galley.

The standard carbon rigging is equipped with an electrically-operated mainsail roller in the boom, very useful to further simplify things both during navigation and when preparing to reduce or lower the sails.

The first Ice 60 Gran Comfort is currently under construction at the Ice Yachts Salvirola-based headquarters, scheduled to be launched next May.

Ice Yachts technicians are available to illustrate and show first-hand the construction quality of this all-Italian model, as well as the attention to detail that only a product born from the Italian design and construction tradition is able to offer.
